E-Bike & E-Scooter Law
Following a concerning rise in serious and fatal e-bike incidents across New Jersey. While electric bicycles (e-bikes) are a popular and enjoyable mode of transport, their potential for high speed (up to 28 mph) introduces significant risks.
It is crucial for parents and riders to understand and comply with New Jersey law to ensure the safety of our children and community.
• Helmet Requirement: Mandatory for all riders under the age of 17. Parents may be subject to fines for non-compliance.
• Where to Ride: E-bikes should be operated in bike lanes/paths or on roads, strictly adhering to all traffic laws (staying to the right).
• Required Equipment: All e-bikes must have a front white light, rear red light or reflector, and a bell for safety, day or night.
• Prohibition on Tampering: Never modify the e-bike's motor or speed limiter to exceed the maximum speed for its class.
Essential E-Bike Safety Guidelines for Parents
1. Mandate Helmet Use: Ensure the helmet is properly fitted (covering the forehead and chin strap is snug). Helmets must be replaced after any crash, regardless of visible damage.
2. Assess Readiness and Skill: While there is no minimum age, young riders should be supervised and must demonstrate a thorough understanding of all road rules and traffic signals before riding independently.
3. Prioritize Visibility: When riding after dark, insist on high-visibility clothing and verify that all required lights are functional.
4. Practice Speed Control: Encourage riders to maintain a maximum speed of 20 mph and to avoid heavily trafficked roadways, utilizing dedicated paths when available.
5. Regular Maintenance Checks: Perform weekly inspections of the brakes, tires, and battery to prevent mechanical failure. Only purchase from reputable sellers to ensure battery quality and safety.
A brief conversation about these rules and risks could save a life. Please talk to your children today about responsible e-bike use.
